All the arrangements for the funeral were apparently finalised, although we received little information about what was happening and what was planned. My entire family was still in a state of extreme shock.

In hindsight I wish I told him that I would have preferred to have had Anni's funeral in Mariestad where she had grown up and was so dearly loved. But it was not my call. Anni had been his wife, after all.

We were appalled and found the whole thing insensitive. We were in no fit state for this celebration. We sat smiling at the Dewanis and their friends but felt hurt and offended. Any proper tribute would have been decently restrained.

Pictures were shown from her childhood through to her wedding. I could not handle seeing the wedding pictures. The slides kept running on the big screen. There were barely any photos of my family, mostly photos of Anni and Shrien smiling together at the wedding.

Ami had had enough and ended up arguing with Shrien. My nephew Neal had seen enough and asked in Swedish whether he should punch Shrien, but Ami managed to calm him down. All this while Anni was lying there.

I wondered if it would have been more decent of him to have accompanied us and paid his respects to Anni. But I had no intention of arguing, or even the will to reflect on it. I had been through a shocking episode and my energy was sapped. All I could think about was Anni and being back with my family.

What perverse thinking was this? I either concealed my anger or was too broken to express my feelings. Or both. As I looked around at the people chatting amicably and tucking into their pizzas, I prayed the two hours would pass speedily.
